Third Man Records is the brain child of Grammy award winning artist and producer Jack White. The first brick and mortar location of Third Man Records was established on March 2009 in Nashville, Tennessee. The store includes a recording, rehearsing, and photography studio for all of the label’s hand picked artists to create their albums entirely in house, and under the production supervision of Jack White. To date Third Man Records boasts an impressive and diverse roster of artists including: Conan O’ Brien, rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson, and Jack White’s own The Dead Weather.
Third Man Records is a model for success in the new Music 2.0 environment. While many major and independent record labels are struggling to create business plans to ensure their future in the record industry, Jack White has already secured the legacy of himself and his company. Instead of keeping a disconnect between the public and the label, Jack White instead offers unique experiences that appeal to the niche market Third Man Records possesses. Jack White built Third Man Records to almost exclusively focus on the physical sales of its products, especially vinyl. He insists that vinyl and digital will be the only two formats that exist in the next decade, and with that vision Third Man Records successfully caters to the appetite many of its fans have for vinyl. Jack White created and released for a limited time only a triple decker record for The Dead Weather single “Blue Blood Blues”, and a portable record player equipped with the technology to turn vinyl into a digital format. Innovations such as that keep Third Man Records continually growing as a successful company, and keeps their fan base happy and intrigued.
In March of 2011, Jack White introduced the Third Man Rolling Record Store at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. Not only does the rolling record store sell most of the same physical music and merchandise that the Nashville store does, but it also comes fulling equipped with a P.A. system so bands can plug in and play outside the vehicle. It is safe to say that through hard work, innovation, and a superior knowledge of the desires of its fan base Third Man Records, if not already, is well on its way to becoming the most influential and sought after Record Company on the planet.
“It’s one of the many mind games we like to play with you here at Third Man Records.” Jack White
